HELB licensed by Shell for the latest Z-Torque technology

Old rig with a new technology – is it possible!?

After more than two years of research, development and testing in the field, HELB entered group of companies licensed by the corporation SHELL for new Z-Torque technology as the greatest achievement in this area.

Hereby HELB ranked among just few companies in the world which can offer this latest technology for improving drilling process to exploration/drilling companies. The good side for customers is that the new technology can easily be implemented not only on new drilling rigs but also on existing rigs with older TD VFD technology from different vendors (such as ABB, Siemens, Yaskawa).

During the normal drilling process on offshore and onshore drilling rigs, vibrations occur. These vibrations (on greater depths) are often caused by the so-called stick-slip phenomena, which can have different influence on exploration process: from reduced drilling progress to the damaged equipment.

For many years, scientists and engineers have been trying to find a good solution to mitigate this (stick-slip) phenomenon. During 90’s Shell introduced famous technology Soft Torque Rotary System – STRS on the market. It was control system which dampens torsional vibrations but with some limitations (system designed for attenuation of the first mode waves only).

New Z-Torque technology is using new and different approach, thus significantly improving drilling process in aspect of efficiency (ROP, costs) and has benefits in reducing the likelihood of premature damage of the drill bit (worn bit), unscrewing the drilling string (twist offs and back offs), damage on down hole tools, …
