From innovation to implementation: HELB presented an advanced meter data management system

The Focus Is on Innovation and Easily Applicable Solutions.

From May 25 to 27, 2025, Šibenik hosted the 9th Conference of the Croatian Branch of the International Electricity Distribution Conference – HO CIRED, the most important professional gathering in the field of electricity distribution in Croatia. The event brought together over 500 participants from Croatia and the surrounding region, featuring 119 technical papers presented across seven study committees. For the second time, HELB participated as a sponsor, and also had a representative among the presented professional papers.

Marko Bošnjak, in collaboration with Tomislav Geceg and Zdravko Ivčić, authored the paper “Advanced metering infrastructure in a closed distribution system, which provides an overview of an innovative system for collecting and managing electricity consumption data in a CDS (Closed Distribution System) environment.

The meter data management system (MDMS) was presented, enabling local processing of high-resolution data and its secure transfer to cloud servers. Special attention was given to the Pidgeon application, developed for Raspberry Pi, which automatically detects meters, checks their functionality, and continuously stores data in a local database. The system is designed with a focus on communication interruption resilience, stability, and scalability across a larger number of locations.

This solution represents a significant step toward the digitalization and modernization of energy management in industrial and commercial settings, enabling more precise consumption control and cost optimization—especially relevant in the context of the energy transition and the growing share of renewable energy sources.
